This Spring and Summer, people were still recovering from Fiona. The evidence of the storm was everywhere. And people wanted to talk about the trees they had lost before they were forgotten. We collected some of their Tree Stories here.
As the anniversary of the storm approaches, we are coming together to shift from sadness and loss to optimism, and to celebrate new community connections.
We are making a new Tree Story!
You are invited!
Saturday, September 23 at Noon.
Join Lieutenant Governor Antoinette Perry, actress Mag Ruffman (Aunt Olivia on Road to Avonlea) and other special guests to plant a new oak tree on the spot at Beaconsfield where a giant (200+ year old tree) fell during Fiona.
Bring the kids! A photographer will be on site to take photos that will be kept to mark the moment in time in the permanent collection at the PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation (Beaconsfield).
There will be musical performances by:
Alan Dowling
Leo Marchildon
Elise Moher
Kelley Mooney
Braeden Woods
Portrait photography on site by Berni Wood.
This is a non-political, not-for-profit event that is open to All! The following partners make this project possible!
- The PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation
- Innovation PEI
- The PEI Alliance for Mental Well-being
- Doiron Landscaping and Garden Centre
Volunteer project lead: Stuart Hickox, with special thanks to Johanna Nutter, Artistic Director of the Victoria Playhouse, and lots of friends!
Stuart is a writer and marketer who was born and raised on PEI but lived "away" for 36 years before moving back to the Island in 2021. In 1994, Stuart bought a clear-cut 10-acre property in Hartsville (ner Mark Arendz ski park) and worked for nearly 30 years with friends and family to restore the woods. He built a cabin there with his dad in 1995 and now calls his "Walden" cabin home.
>> Join our growing group of volunteers! It's not too late to share your tree story with us.
Share your Tree Story!
Click here to tell us about the tree you lost, and attach photos! We will contact everyone and share them here (with your permission). By the first anniversary of Fiona, we hope to have a great collection of stories to compile into an archive.
Or, join our little team!
Send us a note to tell us how you would like to be involved. We are volunteers, and we welcome everyone to join us, particularly if you bring a unique perspective to our understanding of trees and nature and community. Like in the woods, diversity is strength.
